Hi friends!

Even though Modern Day Muses is technically a contemporary/urban fantasy, I am a history nerd at heart and love doing research on various time periods. As anyone who has met me will tell you, if we start talking historical trivia and favorite time periods, it will be a long chat!

So at the end of each of my historical fantasy books (even the ones that take place in the ‘modern’ period), I’ll have a list of notes and historical research that I did. Don’t worry though, while I do have a background in academic research, this won’t be written like a bibliography section. Rather, I’ll mention things (organized by chapter) of interest and reasons for why certain things were written into the story.

I’ll also give a little background for why I chose the setting that I did, since many of these books will take place in lesser known historical spots. With that said, I hope you enjoy these historical notes!

US Capitol

Setting: Washington D.C.

Modern Day Muses takes place in ‘modern day’ Washington D.C. mainly because of two reasons:

  1. I grew up on the East Coast and lived in/around Washington D.C. for a short time. So it is a place I am familiar with and a place I always imagined would be interesting to people from the past, if they ever visited.
  2. While I LOVE time travel stories (seeing people from our time adapt to a world they’ve only read about), I also always wondered what it would be like if people in the past were brought to our time. How would they react? What would they do? Would they adapt easily or struggle? Also, most time travel stories have the woman staying in the past with her historical lover, but not the man from the past coming to the future to be with his modern day lady. So I wanted to play around with that twist. How would a man from 2000 years ago adapt to the modern world, especially if it meant staying with the woman he’s fallen madly in love with?

I also thought Washington D.C. would be an interesting place for an ancient Roman to visit. Given how much of the architecture is Neo-Classical and how much influence Roman governing has had on western society, I always imagined a Roman would find certain things similar  and other things wildly different. Which makes for a good story!
